World Events: 1970-1980

The 1970's was a time of communism expansion headed by the Soviet Union. This caused the U.S.'s chances of winning the Cold War to be minimized.
    April 1970: Pres. Richard M. Nixon decided to extend Vietnam War, in which the Americans were defeated, resulting in Vietnam to become completely communist.

Many Americans did not like the idea of America fighting in the Vietnam War. This is a picture of one of the many protests against the war.
    June 1972-August 1974: Watergate Scandal- 5 men are caught breaking into the Democratic National Convention. After it is exposed that Richard Nixon tried to cover up the break in, he was threatened with impeachment. He resigned in 1974.
    December 1979: USSR invades Afghanistan on Christmas Day- Only months before the 1980 Winter Olympics, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, ending a relatively peaceful time between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
